Low back pain is a generalized complaint which encompasses at least 30 different conditions. It usually involves the lowest 2 lumbar vertebrae. It is estimated that over 75% of the population in industrialized societies will experience low back pain. Low back pain may be associated with family history, disease, muscle strain or poor posture. In young people, most low back pain is due to muscle strain and/or poor posture. In older individuals, low back pain may be a result of the degeneration of the shock absorbing discs seperating the vertebrae from the spine. Occasionally, stress may be associated with spasms in the muscles of the back.

In athletes, back problems are second only to foot problems. In sports, lower back pain is usually caused by faulty mechanics or a traumatic event. Participation in many kinds of sports produces constant abnormal muscle and ligament strain which results in pain. Because of its large area, the back in vulnerable to receiving bruise-causing blows in contact sports. Bruises cause local pain, muscle spasm and tenderness.

Soft tissue injuries of the back most often occur in the lower back. Those that occur in sports are produced by acute twists, direct blows, or chronic strains resulting from faulty posture or from the use of poor body mechanics.

Prevention, Management and Treatment of Low Back Pain

Since a majority of low back pain problems result from poor posture of lifting techniques, avoid putting undue stress on the lower back. When lifting objects, bend at the knees instead of the waist and always use an Industrial Back Support. While walking, golfing, tennis etc. utilize a Lumbo Sacral Support to add strength to the weakened area. When sitting or driving utilize a Comfort Support for the back to help support the weakened area and to help place the spine in the proper position. Pain Relieving Gels and Lotions will also be very helpful in reducing the pain and keeping the muscles loose to prevent further injury.
